Recover abandoned carts

See the shoppers who almost bought, then send them a friendly recovery email to win the sale back.

Lots of shoppers add things to a cart and never finish — they get distracted, they want to think it over, or the timing is just off. Your page keeps track of these almost-sales for you, and you can send a friendly reminder to win a good number of them back.

How it works

When a shopper enters their email at checkout but does not finish paying, your page quietly remembers what they almost bought. Those near-misses collect on your Abandoned carts page so you can see them all in one place. When you decide a cart is worth a nudge, you send the shopper a recovery email yourself — you choose who to email and when.

You are in the driving seat

Tracking happens for you automatically, but the emails do not send on their own. Nothing goes to a shopper until you pick the carts and send. That means you stay in full control of who hears from you and what you say.

See your abandoned carts

In the sidebar, click Orders, then Abandoned Carts. The top of the page shows your headline numbers: how many carts were abandoned, your recovery rate, lost revenue, and revenue you have already recovered. Below that is a list of each abandoned cart with the customer, the cart's value and items, a recovery score, its status, and when it was abandoned.

Use the status filter (all statuses, abandoned, new, pending recovery, email sent, recovered, or unrecoverable) and the timeframe filter (last 7, 30, or 90 days) to focus on the carts that matter most right now.

Send a recovery email

  1. 1

    Open Orders, then Abandoned Carts

You will land on the list of recent abandoned carts.

  2. 2

Tick the carts you want to follow up on

Use the checkboxes on the left to select one cart or several at once. The recovery score and how recently the cart was abandoned are good signals — high scores from the last day or two are a great place to start.

  3. 3

    Click Send recovery email

A short dialog opens. Choose an email style from the list, add a personal message if you'd like, and confirm with Send emails. Your selected shoppers get the email straight away, with your store name and branding already added.

  4. 4

Mark carts as recovered or unrecoverable

If a shopper comes back and buys, your page marks their cart as recovered for you. You can also tick carts and use Mark recovered if you closed the sale another way, or Mark unrecoverable for the ones that aren't worth chasing.

A small discount works wonders

A 10% off code can give a hesitant shopper the nudge they need. Create the code in Discounts first, then mention it in the personal message when you send the recovery email.

Choose your recovery email styles

When you send, you pick from a few ready-made recovery email styles — a first reminder, a discount offer, and a final chance. You can decide which of these styles are available to send, and tidy up their wording, on the Recovery settings page.

  1. 1

    Open Recovery settings

On the Abandoned carts page, click the Recovery settings button in the top right. It opens your Store settings on the Recovery tab.

  2. 2

    Switch styles on or off

Under Recovery email sequences you will see the first reminder, discount offer, and final chance styles. Use the toggle on each one to keep it available to send or set it aside. Each toggle saves on its own.

  3. 3

    Tidy up the wording

Recovery emails use the same templates as the rest of your page, so you can rewrite the subject line and message to sound like you. See the guide on customizing customer emails for how to edit them.

These settings choose your styles, not a schedule

Turning a style on simply makes it available to pick when you send a recovery email by hand. It does not start sending anything on a timer — you are always the one who chooses to send.

See how recovery is performing

On the Abandoned carts page, the Email performance section shows how many recovery emails went out, the open rate, and the click rate. Pair that with the recovery rate and recovered value at the top of the page to see what your follow-ups are bringing in.

Frequently asked questions

Do recovery emails send automatically?

No. Your page tracks abandoned carts for you, but it never emails a shopper on its own. You choose the carts and click Send recovery email each time, so you stay in control of who you contact.

Where do I send emails, and where do I choose my email styles?

You send recovery emails from Orders > Abandoned Carts, which is also where you view carts and see performance. You choose which email styles are available and tidy their wording on the Recovery settings page — reach it from the Recovery settings button on the Abandoned carts page.

Can I email more than one cart at a time?

Yes. Tick as many carts as you like, then Send recovery email once — each selected shopper gets their own email. You can also add a personal message that goes out with all of them.

What is the recovery score?

It's a rough signal of how likely a cart is to be won back, based on what's in it. Use it to prioritise — scan for the higher scores first when you decide who to follow up with.

Will a shopper who already bought get a reminder?

Only if you send one. Because nothing goes out automatically, you simply skip the carts that have already turned into orders — and once a shopper comes back to buy, their cart shows as recovered so it's easy to tell them apart.
